Every movie tells a story. The really great ones have unexpected twists and turns, something we didn’t anticipate coming. Our lives can be thought of like a movie script. Beginning at the creation of the universe, the creation of humanity, the life of Jesus, the fulfillment of God’s redemptive plan, our birth, and our existence. Some of the script has already been written and cannot be changed (our past). But there are still more scenes to be written and played out (our future).
God allows us, the privilege of being a contributor to a portion of this script. We do that by our daily life choices, exercising free will within God’s sovereignty.
“If you confess with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. One believes with the heart, resulting in righteousness, and one confesses with the mouth, resulting in salvation” (Romans 10:9-10, CSB).
Everything we think, do or say determines to some degree the direction of the next scene.
God is the author and producer. He created the characters you, me, and all other people on earth. He created the setting, the universe we inhabit. He told us the plot in the Bible, the history of the relationship between God and man. The Bible discloses the conflict, His goodness versus Satan’s evil. And He prepared the resolution, Jesus defeats Satan through His sacrifice and resurrection, God’s kingdom reigns forever.
As we encounter the unexpected in life, we can take comfort in Christ Jesus and remember it is an opportunity for another scene, which makes the plot thicken. We can remain joyful because we already know the story’s climax is yet to come.
“Choose life so that you and your descendants may live, love the Lord your God, obey him, and remain faithful to him” (Deuteronomy 30:19-20, CSB).
For Further Study
Read and meditate on Deuteronomy 30:19-20, Romans 10:9-10. Have you made a confession of faith as Paul spoke of in Romans? Do you practice making life-giving choices? Are the future scenes heading towards the victory of reigning in God’s eternal Kingdom?
Prayer
Father God, thank You for allowing me freedom of choice within Your sovereignty. Your plan for life is good. I’m grateful for the opportunities You grant me. Lord, give me wisdom and understanding through the Holy Spirit so that I will live a life pleasing You. When the unforeseen intersects life, give me patience and endurance to continue trusting You for mercy. Give me strength to walk in faith with great joy.
