In order to maintain a healthy balance in life, I did not post my usual weekly devotion last Tuesday. I spend considerable time preparing each devotional. My desire is to thoughtfully present what the Lord is stirring in me versus haphazardly dumping shallow thoughts out on readers and friends.
Some devotionals are rewrites of earlier unpublished writings. Today’s is in that category so my format is slightly different. In March, at the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic sweeping across the United States, I wrote a prayer. This poetic prayer emerged from my meditative thoughts about God’s view on suffering.
The sufferings of this present time
Romans 8:18 (CSB)
are not worth comparing with
the glory that is going to be revealed to us.
Almighty Sovereign God,
Thank You for the breath of life that you have given us today.
Through the power of the Holy Spirit,
we can have gratitude in all circumstances.
Open our eyes to see Your daily blessings.
Humble us.
Cause us to shed ourselves of
arrogant pride, selfishness and greed.
Let us remember there are no restrictions – no limits on hope.
Lord, daily renew our hope.
Like a gentle breeze of encouragement
may others be touched by it.
Oh, may kindness, love, forgiveness and generosity
become the contagion that spreads across our land.
With boldness in the name of Jesus
we ask for undeserved mercy.
Spare us from our own annihilation.
Let our anxiety and panic become
an outbreak of peace and trust in You
that sweeps across our nation.

Your prayer of seven months ago is still relevant today, Manette, perhaps more so as our cities exploded into violence over the summer and another fierce election approaches. The people of our nation are still in dire need of hope, mercy, and peace; an outbreak of trust in Jesus Christ IS exactly what we need!
